Supporting a Healthy, Active Student Experience this New Year

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The holidays are an opportunity to rest, relax and reflect with family and friends. Mix in plenty of delicious goodies and less time spent outside in the increasingly cold, snowy weather, and many of us can feel the wave of laziness takeover.

When the New Year comes, many people see a fresh start and make New Year’s resolutions. The most popular of them tend to revolve around a renewed focus on health: lose weight, eat better and be more active, to name a few. For any students that have a difficult time committing to these New Year’s resolutions, Athletics & Recreation at U of T Scarborough can help.

Athletics & Recreation is a hub for healthy living on campus and your go-to department for getting active. Their home, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, features amenities that host a range of indoor programming options, including: Olympic-sized pools, a climbing wall, a gym, fitness studios and an indoor track. If you are unsure which class you want to take, or if you would like to try out a new program, Athletics & Recreation has a free trial week from Monday, January 15 to Friday, January 19.

For those students visiting the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre for the first time or not sure where to start, there are three programs that may be of interest:

Fit with Friends – This is a new fitness program that brings together people who are interested in getting fit in a fun, healthy and inclusive environment. The program offers workouts focused on proper exercise techniques and drills, along with information on proper nutrition and healthy habits.

Drop-in Aquatics – The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre offers free drop-in aquatic classes for all registered students with a valid T-Card. Some of the classes include UTSC Swim Group, Underwater Rugby and Sport and Swim.

Women’s Only Programming – The women’s only programs and activities create an inclusive environment for women of all fitness levels. There are women’s only hours in the fitness centre where a female staff member is always available as well as popular programs such as Aqua Zumba and Self-Defence offered.

All of Athletics & Recreation’s programming is available in the Winter 2018 Active-ity Guide available online or on newsstands across the campus.
