Canadian Friends of Hockey Ukraine (CFHU) is holding a charitable online auction.

“We know that without the support of CFHU many of these children will not have the opportunity to play the great Canadian game of hockey! Thank you for supporting CFHU,” the organization said on their website.

The “Just in Time for Christmas” auction features items donated by the organization’s supporters. The auction provides a chance to pick up interesting Ukrainian Hockey jerseys and help provide new hockey equipment for Ukrainian Young Hockey Players. Some of the items were carried over from the last auction, which took place in August 2021.

“Once again we received items from Dennis Kowalsky, who lives in Ottawa,” Myron Zatwarnicki of Gilbert Plains, MB, Chair of CFHU and the auction’s organizer, said in an email. “As well, this time we have eight Ukrainian Hockey jerseys that were purchased by Taras Dumych in Kyiv and brought by representatives of the Ukrainian Ice Hockey Federation that attended the dinner.”

CFHU hosted the dinner, titled “Helping Hockey in Ukraine”, on December 1. It featured some of the items that were going to be auctioned off. Attendees had an opportunity to place reserve bids on the items before they were placed online.

“If, by chance, there are items that do not reach the reserve bid, they will be either kept until our next auction or sent to Ukraine as gifts,” Zatwarnicki said.

The proceeds will help with programs that sponsor hockey players to travel to Ukraine or to obtain new hockey equipment. The items will be available for pick-up in Gilbert Plains, MB., or in Winnipeg. CFHU will arrange shipment at an additional charge.

The auction is supported by Larry Garton, manager of Garton’s Auction from Dauphin, MB. According to Zatwarnicki, Garton Auctions specializes in farm auctions that generate thousands of dollars by providing an opportunity to host auctions.

“Larry Garton donated his time to provide this opportunity,” Zatwarnicki said. “It is indeed appreciated.”

Zatwarnicki said that the auction provides another vehicle to promote the objectives of CFHU.

“By posting the auction online, CFHU increases its profile amongst Manitobans,” he said.

The CFHU was created in October 2018 as a non-profit committee to assist sports organizations in Ukraine in the area of organized hockey. The key elements of CFHU’s mission statement are the following:

  • To assist in the development of hockey for children in Ukraine.
  • To provide quality coaching and training
  • To provide mentorship opportunities for coaches and managers
  • To collect new and gently used hockey equipment

CFHU sends new hockey items for children in hockey programs in Ukraine.

CFHU sponsored NHL stars Dave and Wayne Babych, who traveled to Ukraine on two separate occasions (Lviv 2018, Kyiv 2019) to conduct skills camps for young hockey players.

CFHU also provided hockey equipment for programs in Vinnytsia, Kolomyja and Kalush. This fall, CFHU sent equipment to Lutsk and Bohuslav that should arrive before Christmas. CFHU is also sending used skates and a used skate sharpener to Kolomyja.
