Sherwood Park Ukrainian Bilingual Program begins new school year
No pandemic can stop the Ukrainian students in Alberta from learning about their culture and traditions. On September 11, the Sherwood Park Ukrainian Bilingual Program successfully begun the new school year. The opening consisted of in-class singing and a divine liturgy. Grades 9-12 students opened their school year with a flag-raising ceremony in celebration of the Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Day on September 7.
“The flags were raised, the anthems were sung! Це було гарне святкування!” stated the Sherwood Park Ukrainian Bilingual Program Facebook page. “А beautiful way to recognize 130 years of Ukrainian immigration to Alberta.”
The Sherwood Park Ukrainian Bilingual Program offers quality Ukrainian language and cultural instruction for students from Sadochok (pre-Kindergarten) to Grade 12 in three area schools:
- Little Orchard Sadochok (Preschool to Grade 4) at the St. Nicholas Catholic School;
- Grades 5 to 8 at St. Theresa Catholic School;
- Grades 9 to 12 at Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School.
The Ukrainian Bilingual Program in Sherwood Park began in 1980 and has seen decades of success in academic achievement, global learning, and celebration of the rich Ukrainian heritage. Students flourish in an academically challenging and supportive environment with excellent teachers, support staff and a committed parent organization. The Ukrainian Bilingual Program follows the Alberta Program of Studies in all subject areas. The language is primarily taught through Ukrainian Language Arts and is integrated into other subject areas as well. Technology and computer skills are incorporated into the curriculum, as are Ukrainian cultural programs.
